Mystic chords of memory lyrics
FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHS
lyrics by E. Glaubitz
I remember sipping coffee
At your kitchen table
It seems like only yesterday
We were talking of our future
Like we loved to do for hours
Picturing a family
Oh, I will never ever forget those plans we made
And I will hold them dear to me
Even though everything else we had has slipped away
Now I flip through an empty photo album
That would have stored our memories
Here’s to all those fallen dreams
To the children that we’ll never meet
To the house on the hill that will never be built
And those family photographs we’ll never see
As I sift through the ashes
I can’t help but wonder
What kind of journey we’d have shared
For every road we would have taken
Would have led to another
In a yet unexplored land
Oh, I will never ever forget the path we laid
But from dancing on the water
We drowed in the tears that washed our hopes away
Now I flip through an empty photo album
That would have stored our memories
Here’s to all those fallen dreams
To the children that we’ll never meet
To the house on the hill that will never be built
And those family photographs we’ll never see
The pages fill with faces
Ghosts of unborn souls, they stare at me
With eyes so bright, and smiles
Of lives that could have been
I will never ever forget... you
Here’s to all those fallen dreams
To the children that we’ll never meet
To the house on the hill that will never be built
And those family photographs we’ll never see
ADDICTION
lyrics by E. Glaubitz
Do you enjoy the company of your craving
Locked away in your lonely world
Huddled in a corner, cold and shaking
Just a hollow shell of who you were
Don’t you realize that something’s wrong
Now everything you loved is gone
And it doesn’t seem to matter
You will follow her footsteps
As she leads you down a bottomless pit
She’s your affliction, obsession, addiction
Now all you have is nothing
Do you even recognize the face you’re seeing
As you stare into your vacant eyes
Now as you search your soul, you find it empty
Does it really come as a surprise
Do you understand that something’s wrong
And everything you loved is gone
When will it start to matter
You will follow her footsteps
As she leads you down a bottomless pit
She’s your affliction, obsession, addiction
And all you have is her
You will follow her footsteps
As she leads you down a bottomless pit
She’s your affliction, obsession, addiction
Now all you have is nothing
All you have is nothing
PEACEFUL
lyrics by E. Glaubitz
I love living fast
I love being bad
I love sleepless nights
I love tasting life
I’m addicted to the rush
Of another one night lust
I can’t get enough
But I know that for you I must change
I love pushing hard
I love speeding cars
I love dangerous
I love outrageous
But with this happiness, I’m sad
Cause being apart drives me mad
So if I want you back
Well, I know I must find that...
Peaceful feeling inside me
For your peaceful love
I love hanging out
I love being loud
I love getting drunk
I love doing drugs
But if I want you to return
There’s a lesson I must learn
I can’t have it all
So I know I must find that...
Peaceful feeling inside me
For your peaceful love
Can I find, can I find that...
Peaceful feeling inside me
For your peaceful love
Can I find it in me?
AWAY
lyrics by E. Glaubitz
She ran away at age eighteen
She yearned to find her destiny
Chance brought her to my door
We formed a bond so strong
These two lost souls
Well, it wasn’t long before
She felt the need to search once more
I couldn’t help but envy her
As she sadly said goodbye
I looked in her eyes, I tasted her lips
One last time
The runaway has gone away
She’s looking for a little freedom and a little bit of love
The runaway has gone away
She’s looking for a little heaven out beyond the next road
Nearly a year had passed
Before I heard from her at last
She said she was happy
But the emptiness remained
And so she set out into the unknown
One more time
The runaway has gone away
She’s looking for a little freedom and a little bit of love
The runaway has gone away
She’s looking for a little heaven out beyond the next road
Not sure how it caught my eye
But there it was in black and white
The newspaper said she was
A drifter without a home
I couldn’t read on
Afraid what I’d see
Cause I knew in my heart who it must be
But I’m sure that she’s found a home this time
The runaway has gone away
She was looking for a little freedom and a little bit of love
The runaway has gone away
Looks like she found a little heaven out beyond the clouds
A little heaven
The runaway has gone away
DESERT RAIN
lyrics by E. Glaubitz
In a dry and silent morning
The sun is slowly rising
It dances on my naked skin
It taunts me with it’s burning
Fills me with a yearning
Temptation yields to beckoning
In whispers of the wind I hear your voice
Like the sweetest poetry
And as this craving starts to build inside
You shower down on me
You fall into open my arms
We intertwine until we’re one
How you intoxicate me, as I drink you in
You sing a liquid serenade
Bathe me in your soft parade
You know how to release me
You make me feel so alive now
So alive now, so alive
You’re my desert rain
So alive now, so alive
You’re my desert rain
Resting in your eyes
Below the burning sky
I sleep inside your cool embrace
But I wake up with a hunger
It’s your spell that I’m under
‘Cause on my lips I still hold your taste
I hear your heartbeat echo through the air
Like the sweetest symphony
And as my craving starts to take control
you shower down on me
You fall into open my arms
We intertwine until we’re one
How you intoxicate me, as I drink you in
You sing a liquid serenade
Bathe me in your soft parade
You know how to release me
You make me feel so alive now
So alive now, so alive
You’re my desert rain
So alive now, so alive
You’re my desert rain
Paint me blue
My desert rain
An ocean of you
My desert rain
MY RELIGION
lyrics by E. Glaubitz
The two of us had lost our way
From the road that we had paved
Maybe we needed to find ourselves
But there’s no way we could deny
The naked love still deep inside
It drew us back again
Now I am reborn
Your love is my religion
I devote myself to you
With all my heart
And you will remain
Forever my religion
I’ll give my love to you
Again, again, again,
And I sing...
In the pain that we shared
With the cross that we bared
We discovered a higher truth
Let’s wipe the tears from our eyes
Forget the past and realize
That we are blessed again
REPEAT CHORUS
Let’s go hand in hand
And bathe in our redemption
Wash away our sins
Because without faith
There’s nothing to believe in
We learned that the hard way
God is mighty, God is great
But it’s to your that I pray
You’re a heaven I can touch
I want to rise to you
To be one with you
Express my love to you
As I kiss you with my words
I watch the smile as it returns
It’s such a welcome sight
I pull your body close to me
Feel your warmth as it covers me
Your arms are my home
REPEAT CHORUS
SENSATION
lyrics by E. Glaubitz
Look at me now, here in my room
Writing this song while I think of you
Look at these bumps on my skin
Chills running up and down my spine again
A kiss of passion in the wind
A breath of life to all that’s been
‘Cause now that love has staked its claim
Nothing can be the same
I’ve been floating, I’ve been flying
I’ve been laughing, I’ve been smiling
Since you wrapped me in this sensation
I’ve been singing, I’ve been beaming
I’ve been living, I’ve been dreaming
Since you wrapped me in this sensation
Look at me now, a grown man
But you make me feel like a boy again
Saccharin words come from my lips
And believe me, I ain’t no romantic
But there’s a glow I can’t contain
As you flow all through my veins
And now an ordinary day
Is cause to celebrate
I’ve been floating, I’ve been flying
I’ve been laughing, I’ve been smiling
Since you wrapped me in this sensation
I’ve been singing, I’ve been beaming
I’ve been living, I’ve been dreaming
Since you wrapped me in this sensation
From our short time together
Come whispers of forever
That grow louder everyday
Look at me now, standing up here
Singing this song for all to hear
Look at these bumps on my skin
Damn, I’ve got those chills again
Got those chills again
Got those chills again
I’ve been floating, I’ve been flying
I’ve been laughing, I’ve been smiling
Since you wrapped me in this sensation
I’ve been singing, I’ve been beaming
I’ve been living, I’ve been dreaming
Since you wrapped me in this sensation

WAR OF LOVE
lyrics by E. Glaubitz
It’s throughout our history
A little human mystery
Why we can’t seem to love each other
Our first breath is innocence
And then we’re polluted by ignorance
And from this crime, how can we recover?
But we can’t condemn what others do
Until we turn the mirror on me and you
It’s got to start with us
Raise up your hands in this resistance
To the ignorant
Raise up your hearts and lift this ceiling
With a show of love
We’ll wage a war of love
Blood is flowing in the streets
There’s a rancid smell of victory
Murder has so many names
Hiding behind holy words
That they twist and turn until it serves
And justifies their selfish needs
But if these “saints” are so full of sin
Then where can this revolt begin?
I’m telling you, it’s up to all of us
Raise up your hands in this resistance
To the ignorant
Raise up your hearts and burst this ceiling
We’ll wage a war of love
We’ll wage a war of love
You, with that mask upon your face
You, with your fist tattooed with hate
You, with that power on your plate
I’m just looking for some sanity
In a world of inhumanity
Is that so much to ask?
Raise up your hands in this resistance
To the ignorant
Raise up your hearts in this explosion
We’ll wage a war of love
We’ll wage a war of love
ALL I EVER WANTED
lyrics by E. Glaubitz
I've prayed with Jesus
Thought with Socrates
Dreamed with Martin Luther
But it wasn't enough
I've fought with Alexander
Ruled with Caesar
Murdered with Hitler
But it wasn't enough
CHORUS:
Oh, but then I found you
Oh, but then I found you
Oh... And that was what I wanted
That was what I wanted
You're all I ever wanted
I've kissed the smile
of Mona Lisa
Made love to Marilyn
But it wasn't enough
I've sang with Elvis
Jammed with Jimi
Gave peace with Lennon
But it wasn't enough
REPEAT CHORUS
Don't need perfection
That's all in your mind
Don't need digital
Analog just suits me fine
Don't need to aspire
to what others find supreme
The bottom line is--
Baby, you're everything
I've drank with Hemingway
Smoked with Marley
Tripped with Leary
But it wasn't enough
I've had the riches of Rockefeller
I bought the world
but it wasn't enough
REPEAT CHORUS
All I ever wanted
All I ever wanted
All I ever needed
All I ever wanted
EVELYN'S PEACE
lyrics by E. Glaubitz
Evelyn has her head bowed down
Hair covers her blood-shot eyes
She just wants to find peace
Grew up a rich little girl
Adorned in gold and pearls
But still it found her no peace
“Daddy, would you please just hold me
Just show me that you love me
I need you to notice me”
Tried cocaine and mescaline
Tried her hand at heroin
But still it found her no peace
Gave herself to all the boys
Though barely seventeen
They quickly left her no peace
“Daddy, I don’t need more presents
Just want to be in your presence
I need you to notice...”
Evelyn, with her head bowed down, she cries
“You don’t even know me”
As the fumes start to burn her eyes, she screams
“You don’t even know me
You don’t know me
You don’t know me”
She seals up her garage
And sits in her new car
And rolls the windows down
Her fingers shake and twitch
As she turns the Porche’s key
Let’s hope she rests in peace
“Daddy, when your at the funeral
Will you please just shed a tear
Let me know you’ve noticed...”
Evelyn, as her walls crash down, she cries
“You don’t even know me”
As the fumes start to burn her eyes, she screams
“You don’t even know me
Will you cry for me?
Will you cry for me?
Will you save me?”
THE STORY BEHIND THE SONGS
Family Photographs
This was the second of four songs I wrote about my girlfriend at the time (the others being Desert Rain, I must have you and Fugitive--the later two are on my solo CD, Twisted). She was a girl who I had pondered marrying. It was a bad, emotionally draining breakup, but it lead to one of my greatest songs.
Addiction
I originally wrote this for a Showtime special on drug addiction. The lyrics are about a friend of mine who has been battling heroin his whole adult life. This one is my favorite on the CD.
Peaceful
I loved the excitement and intensity of the single life. Peaceful is about adjusting to a relationship again. You can’t have it all. Musically this one started with Pat’s verse bass line. The melody and lyric idea came to me immediately. I love the fact that the chorus is actually the mellowest part of the song.
Away
This one started with Pat’s amazing bass line. I instantly played that guitar part and sang that melody and chorus. The “runaway” lyrics are exactly as I first sang them. I pondered changing them, since I don’t personally know any runaways, but I couldn’t find anything else I liked. The whole lyric is fictional. I just needed to justify the chorus lyric.
Desert Rain
After my bad break up with the “Family Photographs” girl, we tried our hand at having an intense physical relationship without officially becoming boyfriend and girlfriend again. It worked for a little while till that whole “Fugitive” incident. Desert Rain is about our favorite activity on the beach. I love the chords in this one and that uplifting key change. Pat and Mike wrote the bridge music with me at a rehearsal. We used to jam on it as a warm up, which is why it reappears as a jamming tag at the end of the song.
My religion
This is about me and my current girlfriend getting back together after our first breakup. It didn’t last. We tried again over a year later (see “Peaceful”) and finally got it right. I never felt this arrangement and recording captured the true essence of this song. I prefer playing this one solo. It works much better for me.
Sensation
I remember after writing this one calling up Rod and telling him, “I just wrote a hit!” I was very proud when it became one of the winners of the John Lennon Song Writing Contest. Lyrically it’s about that feeling you get when you first start dating someone. Too bad it doesn’t last.
War of love
Though I wrote this before 9/11, the lyrics fit perfectly in today's world. I am amazed and appalled how so called pious men can justify the killing of innocent people with god and religion. So much so that I wrote two songs about it. This one is much more hopeful than the later “Holy war,” though.
All I ever wanted
I wrote this song many years ago for my band Liquid. I always loved the lyrics but hated the music. So in this version I scrapped all the original music except the chorus. I recorded this at, old friend and great drummer, Frank Bellucci’s studio (he was a former member of Liquid). It is one of only three Yellowfly tracks that Mike Ratti doesn’t appear on. Can you name the others?
Evelyn’s Peace
This is the song that got Liquid its deal. The string section and Scott Perrson’s percussion are from that original recording. I wrote this song in around ten minutes. I seemed to just pour out of me from where ever songs come from. Musically I was shooting for that Lennon-esque one note melody with the chords floating around in no particular key. It is one of the best songs I’ve ever written.
